Job Title: Staff Attorneys

Under the policies and procedures of South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS), the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), and the Code of Professional Responsibility, attorneys provide direct civil representation and services to the low-income population and the agencies that support them. Attorneys may also focus on client intake, counseling, legal research, case management, training, legal education, outreach, and other duties SCLS may determine are necessary or appropriate to carrying out its mission.

Hiring criteria

1. Member of the SC Bar unless otherwise waived as a requirement.
2. If not a member of the SC Bar at the time of hire, must become a member within the designated timeframe from the hire date.
3. Must have completed all the rules and requirements set forth by the SC Bar and the SC Supreme Court to practice law.
4. Knowledge of and litigation skills in judicial and civil procedures, substantive law, and rules of evidence are required.
5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with clients, staff, courts, community representatives, and the public.
6. Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines and job expectations with limited supervision.
7. A professional, courteous, cooperative demeanor committed to serving low-income populations and understanding poverty law issues.
