Job Title: Law Clerk

We are looking for three enthusiastic law students to join our publications team and participate in all stages of the editing process of the United States Department of Justice (Department), Office of Legal Education’s (OLE’s) publications. The publications team produces the Department of Justice Journal of Federal Law and Practice (DOJ Journal), updates OLE’s confidential legal textbooks, and provides other confidential legal education resources that are available to members of the Department.
Law clerks primarily assist with the first two phases of editing all DOJ Journal articles. When the issue is published, the names of the participating law clerks appear in the print and online issues. Each law clerk is provided a hard copy to keep or provide to future employers as an example of legal researching and editing skills. Law clerks may also have the opportunity to audit official legal education training seminars that the Department provides for its attorneys in the field. Auditing an official Department training is a legal education opportunity that is not otherwise available to law students.
Responsibilities: Research and edit confidential legal textbooks; format, edit, proofread, and check articles for legal accuracy; edit citations to reflect Bluebook form; suggest addition of sources and edits to articles for flow and consistency; and all other duties as assigned.

Hiring criteria

Qualifications: Successful completion of Legal Research Analysis and Writing I & II or a positive recommendation from an LRAW professor; strong writing, researching, and proofreading skills; attention to detail; experience with Microsoft Office, Westlaw, and Lexis; proficiency in the English language; and time management skills and attention to detail.
• Compensation is $18 per hour.
• Commitment is 10−15 hours per week (with flexibility around your course schedule and other obligations) during the academic semesters through graduation and up to 40 hours per week during the summer break.
• Open to current 1Ls and 2Ls (to begin in May through August 2026—depending on availability).
• Document requirements include a resume with three references, a copy of an unofficial law school transcript, and a writing sample (preferably one that demonstrates knowledge of and proficiency with the 22nd edition of the Bluebook).
• Applicants must be able to pass a criminal history and credit background check.
