Job Title: 2027 Judicial Law Clerk – North Carolina Business Court

The Honorable Matthew T. Houston, Special Superior Court Judge for Complex Business Cases, seeks up to two full-time judicial law clerks to begin during the fall of 2027 in the Raleigh chambers of the North Carolina Business Court. The specific start date (usually between August and October) is flexible, and the position is expected to last a term of one to two years as determined by the successful candidate(s) and judge.

Applicants should graduate no later than the spring of 2027; earlier graduates are welcome to apply. Applicants should have keen critical thinking skills, an interest in business law and business litigation, exceptional writing skills, and strong law school academic performance. This position requires a significant interest in reading and writing and an ability to work and think independently.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Prepare initial drafts of opinions and orders on dispositive motions
• Draft orders on non-dispositive case matters reflecting the decision of the Court
• Confer with and assist Business Court Judges in evaluating and administering assigned cases
• Communicate with counsel regarding case management matters
• Conduct legal research on a variety of commercial business issues
• Analyze complex legal data and issues
• Prepare legal memoranda
• Process emergency motions and applications
• Cite check and proofread published opinions prior to publication
• Track current developments in the law
• Prepare and present training to Judicial Branch stakeholders
• Perform other tasks as necessary to the efficient administration of justice

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning immediately, and Judge Houston may conduct interviews before the application deadline. Interviews will be held in Raleigh or via Webex videoconference.

The North Carolina Business Court is a specialized forum of the North Carolina General Court of Justice – Superior Court Division (trial level). Cases involving complex and significant issues of corporate and commercial law are designated by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina for assignment to a Business Court Judge who oversees all matters in the case through and including trial.
