Job Title: Assistant Public Defender – entry level and experienced candidates welcome

Job Duties
• In court: represent clients at consolidated bond court
• In court: represent clients accused of criminal offenses in general sessions court at all critical stages, including preliminary hearing, bond reconsideration, motions hearings, pleas, and trials
• In court: support other lawyers as “second chair” in contested motions or at jury trials or other dispositive hearings
• Out of court: communicate regularly with in-custody and out-of-custody clients
• Out of court: review evidence with clients and other team members as necessary (including mitigation specialists and investigators) to develop case strategy
• Out of court: coordinate with mitigation specialists to assess client needs and assist them in post-arrest mitigation efforts
• Out of court: stay current on areas of the law relevant to pending cases
• Out of court: communicate regularly with legal support staff to ensure timely and accurate communications with clients, prosecutors, and judges
• Out of court: attend in-house and external trainings to develop new skills and knowledge

Qualifications
• Juris Doctor
• All requirements of Rule 403 of the SC Rules of Appellate Court completed
• SC Bar Membership
• No criminal law experience required
• Candidates who speak Spanish may receive additional compensation
• Salary commensurate with experience, according to Charleston County pay schedule
