Job Title: Judge Advocate – Active Duty
Join the most consequential practice of law with the United States Army JAG Corps.
Since 1775, Judge Advocates have been providing principled legal services to our nation’s Army, growing to become one of the largest law firms in the world. Judge Advocates gain immediate experience during their first four years. Judge Advocates practice in a broad range of legal fields–including administrative law, criminal law, operational/international law, civil litigation, contract and fiscal law, environmental law, and private civil law. The JAG Corps provides early litigation experience, with most Judge Advocates practicing in the courtroom within their first three years. Judge Advocates have the opportunity to practice in any of the JAG Corps practice areas while also seeking to specialize as their career progresses.
Opportunities for assignments throughout the world, including: Germany, Belgium, Italy, Japan, Korea, Alaska, and Hawaii.
Benefits Include:
• Direct commission to first lieutenant (O-2). For non-prior service personnel, base pay is $55,281 per year, as well as two non-taxable allowances – $3,849 per year for a subsistence allowance, and a housing allowance which varies based on the individual’s duty station. For example, the housing allowance for Fort Belvoir, VA is $41,436 per year.
• Receive a promotion six to eight months after joining. This results in a pay raise of $8,698 per year in base pay, and an increase in housing allowance.

• At the time of entry, hold a JD from an ABA-accredited law school. The law school’s ABA accreditation requirement may be waived where applicants have earned an LL.M from an ABA-accredited law school.
• At the time of entry, be admitted to the bar of the highest court of any State, Commonwealth, or Territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia
• Be under the age of 42 at the time of entry into the JAG Corps (years of prior commissioned military service will increase the age limit). Waivers for those exceeding the age limit are considered in meritorious cases.
