Job Title: Supreme Court Staff Attorney I (2-year rotation)

The South Carolina Supreme Court Staff Attorney’s Office is seeking a motivated individual to join their team as a Staff Attorney I. This is a 2-year rotating position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION
This job bulletin represents general duties for this position and is not intended to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
As a Staff Attorney I, you will assist the Justices of the South Carolina Supreme Court by reviewing assigned cases and motions, researching and analyzing legal issues, and providing written and oral recommendations to the Supreme Court.

Hiring criteria

Requirements and Qualifications
• A Juris Doctor degree, or anticipated obtainment of a Juris Doctor degree by August 2026, or its equivalent from an American Bar Association accredited school of law.
• Minimum GPA of 3.2
• If not currently a member of the South Carolina Bar, must attain membership within twelve (12) months of start date.
Knowledge of:
• South Carolina Appellate Court Rules;
• Criminal and civil law of South Carolina;
• Theories of legal research and writing
Skills:
• Proficiency with Westlaw and/or Lexis;
• Interpreting and applying law with minimal guidance to prepare memoranda, orders, opinions, and other written documents that are concise, well-reasoned, and accurate;
• Communicating and maintaining effective working relationships with all Judicial Branch staff;
• Receiving and implementing feedback in a positive manner.
Preferred Qualifications
• GPA of 3.5;
• Moot Court, Law Review, Journal, or other comparable experience;
• Internship or Externship with a court or judge.
